Beware of Shiny Things: ✨👀 Staying Focused in Business

Let’s Talk: Studio Talent Collective Blog

The Shiny Thing Trap!

How "great ideas" can quietly derail your focus, time and dilute your results

Quick story for you…

Last week started at 4am with a cockroach crawling across my arm while I was in bed. Yes. We’re starting there. Because honestly… it perfectly sums up the chaotic, slightly unhinged energy of the week.

Later that same week, I was presented with a really exciting opportunity. The kind that sounds amazing. Looks impressive. Feels like a big next step.

And for a moment… I was ALL in.

But then I stopped.

Because I realised something I’ve learned (and re-learned) many times in business…

Not every good idea is the right idea - right now.

Inside Studio Talent Collective, we’re currently growing some huge initiatives:

  • Expanding our talent pathways and agency network
  • Supporting 540+ student performers through Talent Toolkit
  • Growing The Greenroom community for Studio Owners

All aligned. All strategic. All moving us forward.

Adding another “exciting” project wouldn’t grow the vision… it would dilute it.

And THAT is the sneaky thing about shiny opportunities. They rarely look like distractions. They look like growth.

I’ve absolutely been guilty of this in the past. Launching new ideas before finishing existing ones. Spreading my energy too thin. Feeling busy… but not actually building momentum.

These days, before I say yes to anything new, I ask myself:

➡ Does this support my core business?
➡ Does it serve my audience?
➡ Do I have the capacity to do this well?
➡ Does it align with my long-term vision?
➡ If I say yes to this… what am I saying no to?

That last question always tells the truth.

🎙️ I dive deeper into this in my latest episode on Studio Talent Collective ~ the podcast, because shiny object syndrome is one of the biggest silent growth killers I see for studio owners.
