The Attention Economy is Changing
Why I think TRUST might be your most valuable marketing asset right now.
For years, we've talked about the attention economy.
How do you stop the scroll? How do you get more views? How do you capture someone's attention before they move on to the next thing?
And while attention still matters, I've been thinking a lot lately about whether we're entering a bit of a shift.
Because in a world where everyone is creating content - and now AI can create content at scale too - getting someone's attention isn't necessarily the hardest part anymore.
Getting them to trust you is.
I've been listening to a lot of Alex Hormozi lately, and one thing he said recently really stuck with me: “The whole point of marketing is one thing: To gain trust.”
I think that's it.
You can have the most beautiful branding, polished videos and perfectly curated social media feed, but eventually people want to know who's actually behind the business. They want to know that you're real. That you know what you're talking about. That the person they're seeing online is actually the person they're going to get.
And I think that's where storytelling, connection and simply showing up as yourself become incredibly powerful.
Also showcasing the people you serve and their stories.
Alex has also spoken about his belief that the internet will continue moving towards truth and less curated content. Essentially towards content that feels more like the real experience of spending time with someone.
That doesn't mean polished content is dead. I still love a beautiful image and a well produced video! But I do think the mix matters.
Sometimes it's the raw video you filmed in your office or studio. Or even in the car on the way to an event!
Sometimes it's as simple as sharing a thought while it's fresh.
It's telling a story about something that actually happened in your week.
No fancy background. No perfect lighting. No need to wait until you're camera-ready.
Just you, sharing your ideas and your expertise with the people you want to connect with.
So instead of trying to keep up with every new algorithm, trend or marketing tactic, we can focus on something much simpler: being worth trusting.
Show up consistently. Share what you know. Let people get to know you. Give them proof of the work you do, and don't be afraid to let a little of the real person behind the brand come through too.
Maybe the next era of online marketing isn't just about who can get the most attention.
Maybe it's about who people trust once they've given you theirs.
